ADEDOLAPO FASAWE

Since assuming office in September 2023, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe has taken on the role of Mandate Secretary (Commissioner) of Health Services & Environment in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Abuja.

With a background as a Medical Doctor and extensive experience in public health and environmental management, she has spearheaded a novel mandate aimed at enhancing health outcomes while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Dr. Fasawe's leadership has been marked by a concerted effort to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the FCT.
Through a comprehensive approach involving community engagement, transparent governance, and improved service delivery, she has made notable strides in a short span of time.

Her background as the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has equipped her with the necessary skills to drive impactful change.

In addition to conducting regular visits to health facilities, Dr. Fasawe has actively engaged with stakeholders across the FCT, including communities in high-risk areas. Her hands-on approach, combined with effective communication and innovative leadership, has boosted the morale of healthcare workers and enhanced service delivery.

Under her guidance, achievements have been substantial: a 10% increase in Health Insurance enrolment, the distribution of free birthing kits to pregnant women, swift responses to outbreaks such as Lassa fever and Diphtheria, and the expansion of electronic health information systems.

Her collaborative efforts with other government agencies have also yielded positive outcomes, including medical outreaches for vulnerable populations and the implementation of critical interventions like the Emergency Operation Center and Special Care Baby Unit.

Drawing from her successful tenure in Lagos, where she oversaw initiatives such as the Eko Free Health programme and spearheaded environmental campaigns, Dr. Fasawe has brought her expertise to bear in revitalizing both the health and environment sectors in the FCT.

Dr. Fasawe delivered the Eko Free Health programme, Free Limb Deformity Corrective Surgery and Rehabilitative, Operation “SMILE” an annual free cleft lip and cleft palate restorative surgical program and Lagos State Motor Park Health and Safety Programme, to local and international acclaim. She also, initiated and led the first Lagos State Mental Health Desk and first mental Heal policy draft, which later became the Lagos State Mental Health Law of 2018.

As the General Manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Fasawe spear-headed several environmental and sustainability projects, including the Noiseless Lagos Campaign and Ban of Single Use Plastic Bags Campaign, and left behind, one of its kind in Nigeria Laboratory for testing hazardous waste.

By leveraging partnerships with embassies and multinational corporations, she has laid the groundwork for a cleaner, greener environment conducive to improved public health.

Looking ahead, Dr. Fasawe's medium-term plan for 2024 to 2027 promises continued progress and innovation in advancing the health and well-being of FCT residents. With her visionary leadership and track record of success, she is poised to realize her vision of a healthier, more sustainable future for the capital city.

Fasawe is a member of several local and national committees, including the National Committee on the Study on Available Sustainable Alternative Materials to Plastics and Innovative Packaging and Recycling Technologies, sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

She is considered one of the foremost experts in Nigeria on exploring the nexus between public health and the environment for building resilient urban cities for the 21st century.
