ABUBAKAR AHMADU

Dr. Abubakar Ahmadu is the Director, the Department of Medical and Diagnostics and oversees the activities of the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC). An alumnus of the prestigious King’s College Lagos, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with postgraduate residency training at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Jos, Dr Ahmadu joined the services of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) as a Consultant Special Grade II on Grade Level 15 in 2001 and rose to Grade Level 17 with effect from Jan 2010.
Before he was appointed Director of the Department of Medical and Diagnostics in 2020, he worked at Wuse District Hospital and later Asokoro District Hospital. In 2011, he was appointed Medical Director of Maitama District Hospital and was later deployed as Medical Director of Asokoro District Hospital. Dr Ahmadu served as a dedicated and hardworking Medical Director with a passion for transforming healthcare. With a strong background in medicine and healthcare management, he implemented innovative strategies and practices to enhance patient care and comfort, improve outcomes, optimize operational efficiency as well as improve the safety and aesthetics of the healthcare environment. He led a multidisciplinary team to introduce electronic medical record (EMR) to Asokoro District Hospital and achieve accreditation for residency training of resident doctors in various specialties for both the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons.
Dr Ahmadu demonstrated commitment to community welfare and global health equity through volunteer service to the Technical Aid Corps (TAC) programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria where he was deployed to Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea between May 1997 – April 1999. He engaged in capacity-building projects in underserved communities reflecting a dedication to improving health access and outcomes for vulnerable populations. At the beginning of the COVID 19 Pandemic in 2020, he volunteered and served as the first Team Lead of the first FCTA managed Isolation Centre and was given an award for exemplary leadership by the FCT Administration.
Dr Abubakar Ahmadu was appointed in June 2021 as the Chairman of the FCT Emergency Medical Treatment Committee (FCT EMT) saddled with the responsibility of coordinating and enhancing the provision of Emergency Medical Services in the Federal Capital Territory
Dr Ahmadu by virtue of his position is the Secretary of the FCT Medical Board, a representative of the FCT Administration on the governing Boards of some hospitals and a council member of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
As a dynamic and visionary public servant with extensive experience in healthcare management, regulatory compliance and policy development, Dr Ahmadu is skilled in fostering collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure the highest standards of healthcare delivery. He is also committed to promoting transparency, accountability and innovation in both public service and private healthcare establishments.
Dr Ahmadu led a team that worked with stakeholders in 2023 to develop revised regulatory frameworks and standards for private healthcare establishments in the Federal Capital Territory and continues to ensure that intensive inspections and audits are conducted by PHERMC to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and quality standards.
Dr Abubakar Ahmadu hopes to drive positive change and innovation in healthcare delivery in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond with a commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to create a healthcare system that is accessible, efficient and patient-centered and a dedication to safeguarding the health and well-being of individuals and communities.
